THE POVERTY TRAP

An immersive workshop on global poverty.

The Poverty Trap is an immersive workshop developed around real lives and testimonies, allowing participants to experience something of what it feels like to live in extreme poverty. It tells the story of a number of families living in a slum in a large city, where living conditions are extremely tough.

Adaptable and immersive

The Poverty Trap is ideally suited to many different types of groups including; schools, churches, community groups, charities and businesses. It can be tailored to each group’s requirements and, depending on the size of the venue available, can accommodate groups of up to 150 (minimum 30). The experience is suitable for Year 7 and upwards and can either be run as a half-day or as part of a full-day programme.

Practical considerations

Space

An empty space large enough for everyone to sit on the floor and additional space around the edges for the installation of shops & other set pieces eg. a school assembly hall

People

Key characters are played by role-playing actors. To increase impact we often suggest that a number of school staff join the cast and/or act as spokespeople during the debrief.

Equipment

We provide all the necessary equipment. Where possible, we request the use of mics and an integrated AV system into which we can plug and play our sound and visuals from a laptop.

Materials

Our volunteers will bring all the required materials with them. We generally need around 4 clear hours of setup time and around 1.5 hours at the end of the day to to pack-down.
